Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

After registering for e-bill, can I switch the service to another financial institution?

Yes, you can. The procedure depends on whether you are changing just the financial institution or the e-bill system as well.
If you are currently using the e-bill service at a Swiss bank, you can simply switch to another Swiss bank, or even use the e-bill service from several banks in parallel. You do not need to inform the billing company, as it does not know which bank you use to receive the e-bill and so will not be aware of any change.
If you want to switch from a Swiss bank to PostFinance or the other way around, you have to cancel your registration with all your billing companies in the old system and reregister with them in the new system. The reason for this is that the Swiss banks operate e-bill with PayNet, while PostFinance uses yellowbill.

Can I cancel my registration with e-bill?

Yes. You can do this wherever you first registered: in the e-banking service of your financial institution under the relevant menu item («e-bill» or «PayNet», depending on the financial institution).

Can I reject an e-bill in e-banking if I don't agree with it?

Yes. The billing company will receive an appropriate status notification. But you have to contact the biller and say why you object to the bill. Otherwise you will receive a reminder in electronic or printed form, depending on the biller.

Does the e-bill service guarantee data protection?

All the participating financial institutions as well as the network operators, SIX Paynet Ltd and PostFinance, are under contractual obligation to keep the stored data secret and use the information exclusively for the purpose of providing the e-bill service.

Does the e-bill service guarantee data security?

As an integral part of e-banking, the customary comprehensive safeguards and data protection guidelines also apply to e-bill. Data security and security of transmission are a very high priority in the e-bill system:
Data protection is ensured by all the latest security measures in line with the e-banking standards of the Swiss financial institutions.
The transmission of data between billers, the e-bill system and the financial institution uses 128-bit SSL encryption.
All participating partners are under contractual obligation to protect the systems and the stored data.
All security measures conform to the latest technical standards.

For how long does the billing company make the e-bill available as a PDF document?

You can access the e-bill for at least 90 days after payment via the corresponding link in e-banking. After that, the e-bill will be deleted.

To make a payment, click on the menu item, select the function you want and follow the instructions. Just a few clicks and the e-bill is paid.

How do I register with a billing company for e-bill?

As soon as you have activated the e-bill function, you can register for e-bill with your billing companies by filling out a form under the menu item «Billers» or «Invoicing parties» (List of billing companies already affiliated).

How do I register with my financial institution for e-bill?

Log on to e-banking and click on the relevant menu item («e-bill», or «PayNet», depending on the financial institution). Then follow the onscreen instructions. After successfully activating the e-bill function, you can register for e-bill with your billing companies in the same menu area.

How will I know if a new e-bill is available for checking and acceptance?

With most financial institutions, you will receive a corresponding notification after logging on to e-banking. In some cases, you can register for free notification by e-mail. Please ask your financial institution directly for information about this facility.

What does an e-bill look like?

In e-banking, you will see only the payment data: the name of the biller, the date of invoice, the due date, the amount invoiced and the e-bill status.
The e-bill is available to you as a PDF document with a single mouse click (PDF symbol or link) for at least 90 days after payment.
To open the e-bill as a PDF, you need the Adobe Reader, which can be downloaded free of charge from the Internet. You can save and store your e-bill on your PC or another storage medium. You can also print out your e-bill if required.

What does it cost to receive e-bills?

There are no extra costs relating to e-bill.

What happens if I fail to pay an e-bill?

The e-bill will remain available in the system for at least 90 days; after that, it will be deleted. If you fail to pay on time, the biller will send a reminder – either electronically or on paper, depending on the biller.

What is the difference between e-bill and direct debit?

With e-bill, bills are sent to you in electronic form and you can pay them with a few mouse clicks directly in your e-banking system. You decide yourself if and when to pay e-bills.
With e-bill, you are in complete control of your payments at all times.
With direct debits, the billing company debits your account directly with the required amount. You receive a notification from your financial institution for every debit. If you do not agree with the payment, you can register an objection within the defined time-limit and get your money back.

What requirements do I have to meet to take part in e-bill?

You need access to a computer with an Internet connection. You must also have a valid e banking contract with a financial institution that offers e-bill (Click here to see current list).
If you meet these requirements, you can activate the e-bill function directly in your e-banking service and then register for e-bill with the billing companies of your choice (Click here to see current list).
